Smoke Detectors Can Save Your Life

Every house should have at least one. Batteries should be checked at least once a year and replaced. They should be tested every few months to be sure that they are working properly. What are they? They are smoke detectors, a device that has saved more lives than you can even count. At the first indication of smoke inside of any home or building, they emit a horrible high pitched beeping sound that makes people clamp their hands over their ears. Those annoying and incredibly loud shrills are meant to tell people to be aware and possibly get out of the house.

I have three smoke detectors in my house. One of them, in the kitchen, must drive my neighbors crazy. It goes off at least once every few weeks when I am cooking something for a few moments too long or even burn a piece of toast. It is incredibly sensitive, but it has saved me from a disaster. Once, after making toast for myself and settling down to watch the morning news, when my smoke detector sounded. As I bolted from the couch, I smelled a horrible stench. It turned out that when I’d put the cloth cover back on my toaster, it had pushed down one of the levers. The heat had started to make the cloth cover turn black and smoke. Having a smoke detector probably saved me from having a disaster in my kitchen. Now, I never leave my toaster plugged in. One of my smoke detectors also detects carbon monoxide. Sometimes having an alarm system installed in your house can act as a smoke or carbon monoxide detector as well. Plus, if the smoke detectors sound, emergency personnel is contacted immediately through your
alarm system.

Smoke detectors have done more than their share of saving lives and properties. Most people will install them and then never glance at them again. They don’t bother to change their batteries or test them. They figure that they don’t have to. Suddenly, a need arises and the smoke detectors don’t wake them up because their batteries weren’t working. I’ve read too many stories about deaths occurring because of that particular reason. It is a tragedy when that happens. It doesn’t take more than a few moments to test the smoke detectors or replace batteries. Those few seconds out of your life could allow you more years to even enjoy your life.

A Smoke Detector Can Save Your Life

By the end of this article about Smoke Detector, you should have gained enough new knowledge on this subject to be able to explain its main points to another person.

In college, my roommates always knew when I was cooking because the smoke detector would go off. I’m much better now, and can make a decent meal, but because I live in a small place, there are still a few rare times when this happens. It can be scary, even if you are pretty sure you are the reason it is going off, and that there is no other reason for it. Its when the detector goes off in the middle of the night that you have to worry about what is going on and how quickly you can get out of the house.

When it comes to the smoke detector, placement is key. You cant have one in the wrong spot, and you probably need to have more than one. Even small places should have at least two. If you have a smoke detector in almost any space, your notice will be much quicker if there is a fire. While thinking about your home being on fire is not something most want to imagine, you do want to try, so that you know you have your detectors positioned in the best places for the earliest warning.

To understand the next part of this article, you need to have a clear grasp of the material that has already been presented to you.

You should always have a smoke detector in each bedroom, and then in common areas. They should always be placed high up on the wall, as smoke rises and that is the best place for the earliest possible detection. Other than a smoke detector, you should also have at least one fire extinguisher in your home. If you have more than one floor, make sure you have at least one on each. If you have a fire downstairs, you don’t want to have to run up the steps to get to the only one you have. Make sure they are always in good working condition as well.

A big mistake some make with the smoke detector is that they unplug them or take them down when they have gone off. If you have smoky kitchen, this might be something that happens quite often. You can leave them down until you are done and the smoke clears, but you have to remember to put the smoke detector back up. It might be something of a pain to deal with if they are touchy, but that is far better than having nothing at all. Also remember to check the batteries to be sure they are all in good working condition. They cant help you if they simply don’t work.

From beginning to end, this article has helped you to learn more about Smoke Detector than you probably thought you would ever know.
